$PLAINS, Ga., July 3, 1977 — A 30‐year‐old mechanic was held in Sumter County jail in nearby Americus today, charged with 19 counts of aggravated assault after he drove his sports car into a crowd at Ku Klux Klan rally here last night, injuring about 30 persons.<br /> <br /> Special to The New York Times<br /> <br /> The man, Buddy D. Cochran of Americus, who works for a trucking company, appeared this morning at a hearing before Justice of the Peace J. W. Southwell, who set bail at $190,000.<br /> <br /> Mr. Cochran said only, “Yes, sir,” when asked if he understood the 19 counts, each of which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.<br /> <br /> Sheriff Randy Howard said that the 19 charges had been filed on behalf of the 19 persons admitted at hospitals after the incident. Most of the victims suffered fractures and cuts.$
